Spotlight on Abby Higgins: Celebrating a Future Leader in Public Health

As we celebrate her graduation, we’re proud to highlight Abby Higgins — an exceptional student at Purdue University’s Health TechQuity Lab (HTQL). Under the guidance of Dr. Natalia Rodriguez, Abby has made a lasting impact through her dedication to community health and public health research, leaving a meaningful legacy in the lab and setting the stage for her future contributions to the field.

Abby is committed to community service through her work with LTHC Homeless Services and her leadership in Boiler Advocates for Student Empowerment (BASE). Reflecting on these experiences, Abby shared the importance of compassion and humility she learned from her mentor, Becca, at LTHC. “Engaging with vulnerable populations taught me the essential value of showing up with compassion, a lesson I will carry with me throughout my career,” Abby stated.

In her academic journey, Abby has not only excelled in her studies but also contributed significantly as a co-author of research manuscripts and presentations. She discussed the challenge of managing her time effectively while juggling studies, sorority life, clubs, and research. Abby credits tools like HHS Student Life’s assignment tracker and Google Calendar as instrumental in her success. “These tools helped me stay on track with deadlines, plan ahead, and remain accountable,” she explained.

Looking ahead, Abby is excited about her post-graduation plans. “While I’ll continue to work with HTQL here in West Lafayette, I am eagerly awaiting responses from MPH programs across the country. I hope to specialize in healthcare administration and policy,” Abby shared, optimistic about the future.

Offering advice to current and future students, Abby emphasized the importance of authenticity. “Be true to yourself, listen to your passions, and trust your instincts. You are more capable than you think,” she advised.
